Ergothioneine is a powerful amino acid that helps fight the signs of aging and supports numerous aspects of health.
- Supports longevity by aiding in telomere length maintenence 1
- Combats oxidative stress in the brain to support cognition 2
- Protects the heart and is associated with reduced cardiovascular mortality 3
Research-Supported Benefits:
Supports Longevity. Research shows that ergothioneine supports longevity by protecting against accelerated telomere shortening. (1) Longer telomeres are a powerful predictor of increased lifespan and healthspan. (4)
Maintains Cellular Health. Ergothioneine has been shown to reduce levels of oxidative stress. High levels of oxidative stress may contribute to DNA damage, a decline in ATP (cellular energy) production and elevated inflammatory markers. (5)
Promotes Heart Health. By reducing oxidative stress, ergothioneine exhibits powerful cardioprotective properties. Oxidative stress is associated with accelerated aging of heart cells, studies show ergothioneine reduces cardiac-related mortality risk. (6)
Enhances Brain Health. Low levels of ergothioneine are correlated with neurodegeneration and cognitive impairment. (7) Animal studies have found that administration of ergothioneine improves markers of memory and mood. (8)
Improves Performance. Research suggests ergothioneine may improve markers associated with fitness and muscle health. One study found that administration ergothioneine to mice increased time to exhaustion during aerobic activity and enhanced protein synthesis post-exercise. (9)
